3| the city

On Friday, July 24, 2009, at 16.00, the third exhibition from the Young Romanian Art series will be opened in the New Gallery of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Venice, Italy. The exhibition is entitled 'the city', and it brings together works by Tudor Bratu, Elena Ciobanu, Alexandru Ciubotariu, Tudor Prisacariu, Andy Sinboy.

Almost all of us live in the city now. The highways have connected the most distant lands. Television, internet and GSM are with us everywhere. Natural places untouched by man have all but disappeared, and we don't want to hear about them any longer.

The strategies of the administration and of the financial powers formulate our lives. They set in motion the enormous building sites of social separatism and the surveillance systems comprising bodyguards and CCTV cameras.

Through the sieve of these grand gestures our microscopic daily tactics go through, unnoticed. The minor protests written with a marker on the freshly painted wall, the practical jokes played on advertising in public space, our daily observations on the decay of urban and rural landscapes, our retreat in private space through the use of photographs.

Young Romanian Art is Mircea Nicolae's residency project at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Venice, during which the artist functions as an organizer and a curator. This series of one-week exhibitions aims at promoting young Romanian art during the Venice Art Biennial 2009.
